The Public Accounts Committee is established under the Public Accounts Committee Act 1992. The Act empowers and requires the Committee to examine and report to Parliament on:

  • the Financial Statements of the Republic together with the reports of the Director of Audit; and
  • the Financial affairs of public corporate bodies that are required to report their financial activities to Parliament.

The Committee is also required to inquire into any question in connection with the public accounts referred to it by Parliament and report to the House.

In February 2010 the Public Accounts Committee commenced an Inquiry into the Special Report of the Director of Audit 1998-2008.

The Committee of the 21st Parliament had its first meeting on 18 June 2013.
